Many treatments are available to cure infertility problems but In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the most successful and advanced fertility treatment. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a complex process of fertilization mainly involves combination of sperm and egg outside the body. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a type of Assistive Reproductive Technology (ART). It involves retrieving eggs from a woman’s ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm. This fertilized egg is known as an Embryo. The Embryo is either frozen for storage or transferred to a woman’s uterus. Doctor can also implant embryos in a surrogate gestational carrier.

IVF is very helpful for couples who want to have a baby. It is expensive and invasive, so couples prefer other fertility treatments first. Stimulation
A woman naturally produces one egg during each menstrual cycle but IVF needs multiple eggs for fertilization. Multiple eggs increase the chances of developing a viable embryo. Woman receives fertility drugs to increase the eggs production. During this time, doctor performs regular blood tests and ultrasounds to monitor the production of eggs and to determine retrieval time.
Egg Retrieval
Egg retrieval is also known as follicular aspiration. It is a surgical procedure performed with anesthesia. In this procedure, doctor uses an ultrasound wand to guide a needle through the vagina, into ovary and into an egg-containing follicle. The needle suctions eggs and fluid out of each follicle.
Insemination
Now semen sample from male partner is needed. A technician mixes the sperm with the eggs in a petri dish. If this process fails to produce embryos, then doctor can decide the use of ICSI procedure.
Embryo Culture
Doctor monitors the fertilized eggs to confirm proper division and development of eggs. The embryos can undergo testing for genetic conditions at this time.
Transfer
When the embryos are big enough, they can be implanted. This normally occurs three to five days after fertilization. During implantation, a thin tube called a catheter is inserted into vagina, past your cervix and into uterus. Then doctor releases the embryo into uterus. Pregnancy occurs when the embryo implants itself in the uterine wall. This can take 6 to 10 days. Doctor performs blood test to determine the pregnancy.
