INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is one of the most effective fertility treatments. It is also called as Donar Insemination, Alternative Insemination or Artificial Insemination. In this treatment procedure, sperms are placed directly into a woman’s uterus. During natural conception, sperm have to travel from the vagina through the cervix, into the uterus and up to the fallopian tubes. In Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment, sperms are washed as well as concentrated and finally placed directly into the uterus.

IUI treatment helps sperm to get closer to egg. It also saves time and distance which sperm has to travel to reach egg. The main goal of IUI treatment is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization. IUI treatment is less invasive and less expensive as compared to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment.

We have a sophisticated (Intra Uterine Insemination) IUI center in Powai which provides effective and result oriented IUI treatments to patients. Need of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment

IUI treatment is one of the most advanced fertility treatment. It is relatively noninvasive and affordable fertility treatment as compared to other expensive fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). In some cases, couples can begin with IUI treatment before progressing to IVF. IUI can be the only treatment required to achieve pregnancy.

IUI treatment is performed by using a male partner’s sperm or donor sperm. IUI is most commonly used to treat various infertility diseases such as:

  • Unexplained Infertility
  • Mild Endometriosis
  • Issues with the Cervix or Cervical Mucus
  • Low Sperm Count
  • Decreased Sperm Motility
  • Issues with Ejaculation or Erection
  • Same Sex Couples Wishing to Conceive
  • A Single Woman Wishing to Conceive
  • A Couple Wanting to Avoid passing on a genetic defect from the male partner to the childvvvv

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment is not effective to treat various conditions such as:

  • Women with moderate to severe endometriosis
  • Women whose both fallopian tubes are removedor have both fallopian tubes blocked

  • Less invasive
  • Less expensive
  • Painless
  • Faster
  • Higher success rate

Procedure of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment

  • Woman has to visits doctor’s clinic while on period for bloodwork, ultrasounds and medication instructions.
  • If medications are prescribed, woman should start taking them while on period. About a week after starting the medication, patient is likely to have another ultrasound and possibly bloodwork.
  • Depending on the test results, doctor determines proper ovulation time and asks couples to visit clinic typically 10 to 16 days after starting of medicines.
  • Male partner provides semen sample. The sperm is washed in the laboratory to remove debris, chemicals and seminal fluid. Sperm washing is necessary before IUI treatment to avoid any complications while fertilization.
  • IUI is quicker, painless and does not require anesthesia.
  • During the procedure, woman `lies on the table and doctor uses speculum to gently open the vagina and to visualize cervix.
  • Then sperm is passed through the cervix and placed into the uterus using a long, very thin tube.
  • Patient has to remain lie back on the exam table for 10 to 30 minutes following the insemination.
  • After the procedure, women can experience mild pain, bleeding and little discomfort.
  • In some cases, patient needs second insemination treatment.
  • Woman can take pregnancy test two weeks after the IUI procedure.

Risk of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment

  • Doctor uses sterile instruments so there is no risk of infection after the IUI treatment.
  • If medications are used to induce ovulation then there is a risk of pregnancy with multiple babies. In this case, doctor always tries to balance the amount and type of medication, along with bloodwork and ultrasound monitoring to prevent release of too many eggs at one time.
  • Sometimes the ovaries over-respond to fertility medications. This condition is called as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. This can result in an enlarged ovary, fluid buildup in the abdomen and cramping.
  • If woman is taking medicines for IUI and experiences problems like dizziness, shortness of breath, sudden weight gain, nausea, vomiting, severe abdominal pain and increase in abdominal size then she should immediately consult the doctor.

The success rate of IUI treatment is depending on the response of every couple. The results are not same in all couples. The success rate is mainly depending on the various factors like age, infertility diagnosis, fertility drugs and other fertility concerns.

The cost of IUI treatment is depending on patient’s location, health conditions and specific needs. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a relatively low-risk treatment which is a wonderful option for many women or couples trying to conceive.
