What is IUI (Intrauterine insemination)?

IUI is the process where washed, concentrated highly motile sperms are placed directly in the woman’s uterus with the help of a narrow catheter. This is a simple outpatient procedure with minimal complications. The process is timed according to availability of egg in the system. It may be done in a natural cycle or in cycles where medication has been taken to ensure egg development. IUI treatment is one of the most advanced fertility treatment. It is relatively noninvasive and affordable fertility treatment as compared to other expensive fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). In some cases, couples can begin with IUI treatment before progressing to IVF. IUI can be the only treatment required to achieve pregnancy.

Procedure of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment

Woman has to visits doctor’s clinic while on period for bloodwork, ultrasounds and medication instructions.
If medications are prescribed, woman should start taking them while on period. About a week after starting the medication, patient is likely to have another ultrasound and possibly bloodwork.
Depending on the test results, doctor determines proper ovulation time and asks couples to visit clinic typically 10 to 16 days after starting of medicines.
Male partner provides semen sample. The sperm is washed in the laboratory to remove debris, chemicals and seminal fluid. Sperm washing is necessary before IUI treatment to avoid any complications while fertilization.
IUI is quicker, painless and does not require anesthesia.
During the procedure, woman `lies on the table and doctor uses speculum to gently open the vagina and to visualize cervix.
Then sperm is passed through the cervix and placed into the uterus using a long, very thin tube.
Patient has to remain lie back on the exam table for 10 to 30 minutes following the insemination.
After the procedure, women can experience mild pain, bleeding and little discomfort.
In some cases, patient needs second insemination treatment.
Woman can take pregnancy test two weeks after the IUI procedure.
